COUNTY CAVAN
|
|
 |
|
County Cavan - Of Ulster, but in the Republic
|
|
People often just pass through this county on their way to somewhere
else but it is worth a closer and more detailed look and a chance for
you to get off the beaten track and sample Ireland at its best. It is in
this county, at the foot of the Cuilcagh Mountain, that the River
Shannon rises.
You will find rivers, streams, canals and lakes to entice those water
lovers amongst you. So pack your fishing rods if you have time to spend
a quiet day sitting and fishing and enjoy the view at the same time.
The town of Cavan itself is worth exploration, if only to find out more
about its famous crystal. Cavan town dates back to medieval times and
you will find its narrow streets quaint and interesting to explore.
The Cavan Way is a well marked walking route with views across hills and
valleys. If you are feeling more adventurous then you might fancy
exploring the county from a bicycle or even from the saddle of a horse.
County Cavan is an excellent place if you are an avid bird watcher. For
those twitchers amongst you willing to wait patiently then you may well
be rewarded with the sighting
of a peregrine falcon, a merlin or even red grouse. All of these birds
find County Cavan to be an ideal habitat to live in and we think you
will enjoy it too.
Worth a look...
Bellamont Forest Park
The park is straddles the River Dromore, where it flows from Dromore
Lake and constitutes a national sanctuary with five miles of forest
walks.
Lifeforce Mill, Cavan
This is the place to go to see how soda bread is made – from grain
to the very finest Irish wheat fl our, using the Kennypottle River to
drive the enormous stone wheels.
Did You Know
The Cavan and Leitrim Railway was one of Irelands's famous narrow gauge
steam lines. It ran through the top corner of the county to Belturbot. A
description of the line will be found on the County Leitrim page.
US General Philip Sheridan (1831-88), one of the States' greatest-ever
military leaders, was born in Geagh near Bailieborough. The remains of the
cottage still exist.
