COUNTY TIPPERARY

The County is bounded in the north by the lovely Lough Derg. It is here that you will fi nd the pretty lakeside villages of Dromineer, Garrykennedy, Terryglass and Ballina. These are well worth enjoying together with the lovely lakeside views that will make you feel relaxed and energised and wanting to explore more of Ireland. Tipperary is rich in archaeological sites for you to explore. You will also find fishing, golf, mountain walking and caves to keep you busy whilst you enjoy the scenery.

If you have time visit the County’s capital at Nenagh. Whilst in Nenagh you can discover the history behind the Gaelic Games, learn about the Famine and discover the War Museum. Just outside the capital to the southwest you will fi nd the restored Cistercian Holy Cross Abbey.

South of Neagh is Silvermines which is an historic mining area. This provides the backdrop for the Slieve Felim range of mountains. The Slieve Felim Walking Way has 36kms of walking routes to keep walkers entertained and rewarded with scenic views across four counties. Perhaps though, Tipperary is most famous for that very popular World War I song, but really it isn’t a long way to go at all.

Worth a look...

Rock of Cashel
Looming over the town of Cashel, this is an imposing sight, especially at night when it is floodlit. It was once the seat of the kings of Munster, a symbol of royal and priestly power for more than a thousand years.

The Hills
The Glen of Aherlow offers ample opportunity to walk, cycle and generally get lost. The Slieve Bloom Mountains, north-east of the town of Roscrea, offer an attractive, unspoilt landscape of open vistas, wooded glens and mountain streams. The Broad expanse of Lough Derg in the northeast of the county offers excellent boating and angling opportunities. In the south are the Galtee Mountains, the Knockmealdowns and the isolated height of Slievenamon. Keeper Hill is the highest point among the various groups of hills in the north.
Carrick-on-Suir
A picturesque town situated on the river Suir. Carrick Castle is an Elizabethan fortified mansion, the only one of its kind in Ireland. The 15th century town bridge has seven arch

Did You Know
Miler Magrath was a 17th century religious figure who somehow managed to become an archbishop of both Catholic and Protestant churches at the same time. He is buried on the Rock of Cashel.
Ireland's highest peak - Galtymore - is in this county. It tops out at 3,018ft.
Ecclesiastical silver from the 8th century was uncovered in an old monastic site at Derrynaflan near Thurles in 1980. I's now in the National Museum in Dublin.
