COUNTY WICKLOW
|
|
 |
|
The Garden of Ireland
|
|
County Wicklow is close to
Dublin so if you want to see mountains and greenery then this is the place
to go. The county is known as the "Garden of Ireland".
The Wicklow
Mountains are a must and they have been made into a National Park – the
views are impressive and well worth a drive to, or even around if you want
to stay in your vehicle and not enjoy a walk. The rocky mountain outcrops
are softened by the green wooded areas making them look very picturesque.
Wicklow has its share of waterfalls and lakes so it is ideal for fishing,
walking, boating and cycling.
There are interesting houses and gardens to
visit, explore and discover including Powerscourt, Kilruddery, Russborough,
Avondale and Mount Usher Gardens.
County Wicklow has many lovely towns and villages and some
you may have already seen when watching television. "Ballykissangel" and "Glenroe"
were filmed in Avoca and Kilcoole so you may discover it looks all too
familiar after all. Easy to get to and easy on the eye, Wicklow has
everything a visitor could want. Come and see for yourself.
Worth a look...
Bray to Arklow by train "Spectacular" is the only
way to describe this. South of Bray, the train picks its way delicately
along the edge of a cliff in best Swiss style before turning inland to
view countryside that in inaccessible by road.
Powerscourt The glorious formal gardens at
Powerscourt overlook the Sugar Loaf Mountain and were originally designed
by Richard Castle between 1731-40.
Avoca This is the village used in the TV series
Ballykissangel. Many of the names used in the series have now been adopted
in the village as it cashes in on its celebrity.

| Did You Know |
| The 'village' of Ballykissangel in tv land is actually Avoca. Many of the names used in the series have now been adopted by the buildings in the village as it cashes in on its celebrity.
Arklow has a port which is the base of Ireland's largest shipping fleet.
The Wicklow Way is on 81-mile footpath which stretches from Marlay Park in the Dublin suburb of Rathfarnham to
Clonegal.
The village of Shillelagh is in County Wicklow. It's in the valley of the Derry river and is best know for its oak forest. Just why a knobbly blackthorn stick used for offensive purposes should have acquired that name is the subject of several stories which the locals will happily share with you.
